Is Dual Citizenship Allowed? (FAQ)

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to frequently asked questions about holding Polish citizenship alongside US or Canadian citizenship.
Does Poland allow holding a second citizenship?
Yes. Under the currently applicable Act of 2 April 2009, a Polish citizen may hold the citizenship of another state at the same time, without being required to renounce it. However, within Polish territory, the Polish authorities recognize the person exclusively as a Polish citizen, regardless of any other citizenship held.
No, provided the law of the other country (US, Canada) also permits holding dual citizenship, which is the case in most instances.
No. A Polish-language proficiency test is required only in the procedure for recognition as a Polish citizen (e.g. through marriage or long-term residence), not in the procedure for confirming citizenship by descent.
